No Writers Room???
Updated: Feb 2, 2020
It was around 8am when I began my impulsive morning routine. Checking emails, responding to social media DM’s, and scrolling through my glorious twitter feed. When suddenly the only thing my Twitter feed could present to me was “We hate Tyler Perry” content. Hate probably isn’t the best word to use but the slander was definitely real.
Tyler Perry recently released a statement to multiple media platforms that despite having several successful shows and movies he has no writers room. Perry stated that he is the sole creator, writer, producer, and director of all of his screenplays. With news of the newly founded Tyler Perry studios, writers were eager to learn if there would be room for career contributions to Perry’s legacy. Unfortunately, they were sadly dissatisfied with Perry’s tweet “WORK ETHIC!! Come on. Let’s go get 2020!!!” And an image of a stack of scripts.

Although the tweet, Perry said was to encourage aspiring writers and filmmakers, it was not taken as motivation. Fans took to twitter to express their opinions.

The re-occurring statement that Perry should hire
more black writers to provide a different written perspective to his screenplays was evident. Fans bashed Perry for withholding jobs from other creatives and not providing enough character development.
In the age of entrepreneurship, Influencers, and self-starting businesses is Perry wrong for keeping his basket so close to him? Should he extend more opportunities to those aspiring to break into the film industry?
